Breckenridge is rich with history. It was a town founded in 1859 with roots deep in the mining industry. While today it is considered one of the premier ski resorts in the world, it wasn’t until 1961 when Peak 8 was opened as a ski resort. During the intermediate years, Breckenridge profited from gold and lumber. The Breckenridge Heritage Alliance preserves this storied history and provides a wealth of captivating walking tours that are led by knowledgeable locals. Here are some of our favorites, you shouldn’t miss when you’re in town.
Washington Gold Mine Tour
Learn about Breck’s history in mining from a local expert! You can explore the Washington Mine and learn about the history of this expansive gold and silver mine. You will even get to pan for gold yourself and keep your findings! This tour is highly recommended as a fun family activity in Breckenridge. As you plan, keep in mind that it is only available during the summer season, June through September.
Swinging Doors Saloon Tour
This walking tour is designed specifically for adults 21 and up. You will learn about the saloons that have been around since the 1800’s and sip some of the best drinks historic downtown Breckenridge has to offer.
Ski Through History Mountain Tour
Skiing is the heart and soul of Breckenridge in modern history. Most of Breckenridge’s visitors are drawn to the town because of the world class skiing it offers. On this skiing tour, you can learn the history of the runs, skiing, and the town as it relates to the ski resort. Intermediate skill in downhill skiing is required for this adventurous tour.
Breckenridge Haunted Tour
If you and your family love ghosts, this is the tour for you! This walking tour leads to some of Breckenridge’s oldest homes on a quest to encounter the residents that are still rumored to haunt them. Learn the history of the area with the added thrill of experiencing the supernatural. This tour is offered year round.
Victorian Tea and Tour
Learn about what life was like for a woman in the early 1900’s. Tour downtown from the view point of Katie Briggle, a socialite who dominated the culture and high society of Breckenridge. Then, tour her Victorian home, where she was known for hosting elaborate parties and events. Enjoy tea and treats as the tour concludes. This tour is only available on specific dates, so be sure to call ahead.
High Line Railroad Park
While not exactly a tour, we can’t ignore the High Line Railroad Park, located on Boreas Pass Rd. The park includes a real train engine, one of the last few remaining of its kind. There is also a caboose, rotary snowplow and flatcar. Lastly, there is a small museum. Kids and adults alike will love this close up view of the train cars and the history of the railroad. The trains are accessible every day, sunrise to sunset, but the museum has limited hours so check before you go.
